Coffered ceilings have been around since the time of the Greeks and Romans, who cut up into stone ceilings to create sunken panels known as “coffers”, for decorative and structural purposes.  The coffers were often square or rectangular in shape; the rigid framework around the coffers provides the structure and strength of the ceiling.  Later versions were built by crossing wood beams over the ceiling, which is what a contemporary coffered ceiling will immediately bring to mind.  Coffered ceilings are a classic and beautiful design, as well as a visually stunning piece of woodwork that will amaze any guest in your home.   The design of the “beams” can be very simple, or they can be covered with trim for a more elaborate look.

Tray ceilings are made by building the ceiling at two different levels.  They must be installed in rooms with high ceilings, as the edges of the ceiling will be dropped down to create the tray effect.  Tray ceilings can be any shape or size and can be trimmed with crown; they can be as simple or as intricate as you want to make them.  Rope lighting is often added in tray ceilings to create a warming effect in the room; the lighting sits up in the ceiling where you can’t see it directly and casts a soft warm glow.
